We've heard people refer to email marketing as old-school, however email marketing budgets are being increased more and more because of the effectiveness email marketing has on recipients. Of course you have those that abuse email marketing and leave a bad impression for those who are doing it right. The most important thing for email marketing is that those using it are sending relevant content to consumers who have opted in to receiving it. Most high-end reputable email marketing companies stress this to their clients, which doesn't mean a lot to the end user necessarily, but it's becoming harder and harder for spammers to find a reputable email marketing company to partner with to deliver their messages. It's all about educating clients on how to be better email marketers so that we change the way email is perceived.
Emal marketing has also come a long way since the beginning, and now several companies are integrating with social media in order to help companies get their message out. The “share to social” idea is catching on and bringing new life to email marketing.

I agree with you that Aweber is far superior to MailChimp, and even when a client of mine was paying MailChimp $200 a month for email marketing we were still unable to get any decent form of support.

How To LOSE Subscribers On Your Email Marketing List
I think we are already starting to see a shift. I can be the biggest evangelist for email marketing in the world. I can comment on every blog post, tweet, LinkedIn group, Quora question, etc. However, if, as a Community Manager, I’m not helping to bring in and/or close new business, I’m not really all that valuable in the long run.
Sorry you're email marketing efforts haven't panned out thus far. Don't give up though!

Let me see if I can help… The biggest thing I see is that your ‘points’ are being made too far away from the subjects… (and your pronouns aren’t directly linked to the subjects to which they refer) for example you wrote: The email marketing industry has abused the word “opt-in” for far too long. It has been overused for many years and, at this point, the word has lost almost all of its original meaning. You may consider: For many years one of the most abused words in the email marketing industry is “opt-in”. And as an example… this is a succinct version of your first paragraph: For many years one of the most abused words in the email marketing industry is “opt-in”. Misuse of this phrase by list vendors and senders has led to it no longer representing a good faith relationship between sender and customer. My last question is who is your audience? people who are familiar with opt-in? if not you may want to consider the following framework for communicating your thoughts effectively: P1) Make your point up front – Email Marketers need to stop referring to theirs lists as opt-in and should focus on permission date instead P2) What is opt-in and how is it misused today P3) What is a better approach and why P4) Make your point again and close Sorry have to run but hope this helps
